Summer Plans! - Expo '70 & Plankton Wat 12"

Hello all,

Thanks to everybody who came out and partied at Debacle Fest 2013.  It was a roaring success and is going to be very hard to top next year!

As for plans for the next few months.  We have a few very exciting releases on their way plus more and more actions from the MOTOR camp.

First and formost is the upcoming split release from Expo '70 and Plankton Wat.  The release highlights two of the best psychedelic solo guitarists in operation today.   Very excited to get this out.  Will be available in August with a pre-sale starting in late July.

The MOTOR crew has been planning quite a summer as well.  We will be taking a small trip south to Olympia and Portland in July with MOTOR VI going down in Seattle on July 26th at Pony!  In addtion to recently releasing our first single, Airports "Sweat/Pleasure", we will shortly have our first white labels as well.  Keep an eye on motorcollective.com for more info!

That is just a fraction of the amazing releases we have planned!  Stay tuned for MOTOR singles from Patternmaster and HOM, Debacle LP's from Biosexual, LA Lungs, King Tears Bat Trip, Hobo Cubes and more.

Thanks!
Sam

Debacle Fest! March Sale! Total Life!

Hello All,

It’s been a while since I updated you to all the happenings here at Debacle.  As it turns out I have more amazing things to announce than ever before.  We have announced the line-up, schedule and tickets for Debacle Fest 2013, new Total Life LP drops on Tuesday March 5th, the first MOTOR single is out shortly after that, and our yearly March Super Sale is happening.  Ok let’s just dive in.

Debacle Records and Hollow Earth Radio Present Debacle Fest 2013

I can’t wait for you to see the line up for Debacle Fest 2013.  Go over towww.debaclefest.com and take a gander, it’s cool, I’ll wait….YEAH I KNOW!   It’s crazy right?!  For those of you who didn’t click over, we have put together an insane line-up that brings together national, regional and Seattle artists for a super PACKED weekend.  Let me throw some names at you; Expo ’70, Date Palms, Nate Young, John Wiese, Hieroglyphic Being, Moon Pool & Dead Band, Golden Retriever.   It’s really going to be a special weekend.  I would love it if you came and joined us in Seattle for it.  Also, if I have you convinced and you are planning on coming out, please look into the weekend passes and presale tickets.  They are at least a 25% or more discount off the door price. This year we are also proud to partner with Hollow Earth Radio.  All profits from the weekend will go to the Seattle based internet radio station and local music fixture.  Finally stay tuned to even more details, announcements and fun surprises around the fest over the next two months.

Annual March Super Sale

Once again I am stoked to announce a month full of stupid great deals celebrating the 8(!) year back catalog of Debacle Records and my own birthday month.  This year is special because for the first time we have vinyl releases out during the sale.  Like years past, we are offering the entire back catalog for a stupid cheap price of $70+shipping for all 53 releases.  For the people who bought the whole back catalog already we have a bundle of all the releases since last year’s sale; 13 records including all 3 pieces of vinyl for $40+shipping.  For those of you too cool for CD’s you can buy just the vinyl catalog for $25+shipping.  For the loyalists that have nearly everything already or only want digital items use the promo code “madness” at our bandcamp for 30% anything physical or digital in the store.  For a rundown on the details of each bundle jump over to our page about the sale.

Total Life out March 5th

Very excited to finally be releasing this beauty of an album from one of my personal favorite musicians, Total Life (Kevin Doria of Growing).

Total Life – Bender/Drifter

With Growing on indefinite hiatus Kevin Doria has returned with his new primary project Total Life.  Bender/Drifter is made up of two sidelong tracks exploring minimal modulation changes and processes on lofty walls of roaring drone.  This verticality of composition owes something to Matthew Bower’s sculptural fuzz techniques, though long time fans will recognize the minimalistic tones as echoing some early Growing tracks like "Anaheim II".  Bender/Drifter is like staring at the sun through a thin sheet of overcast.  A muted burning glow, stoically unchanging, yet remade by the slowly drifting cloud lines.

Recorded by Kevin Doria
Mastered by Scott Colburn
LP on 150 gram white vinyl

MOTOR revs up for its first release!

On March 12th we will be releasing the first single from our new sister label MOTOR.   I will dive deeper into this as we approach the release date, but here is the rundown.  Airport (Jayson Kochan of TJ Max and Midday Veil) will be releasing a 12” single that is the first of many for MOTOR.  The single is titled Sweat/Pleasure and features a remix of Sweat from his TJ Max band-mate Mood Organ.  We will be releasing a video of the single shortly.  The MOTOR crew couldn’t be more excited to take this first step towards showing you all what we have been cooking up in dark sweaty clubs in Seattle over the last year.  Head over to the MOTOR bandcamp to hear a preview and pre-order the single.

The Debacle team has grown!

I wanted to take a moment to give out a long overdue shout out to the first volunteer employee of Debacle Records.   If you have been going to shows in Seattle over the last few years you have probably seen Rachel LeBlanc buzzing around running shows, fronting local skronkers WaMu, co-booking the monumental event series Bad For Jazz with Justin Legg, connecting key player around town, or just helping me from going insane.  Rachel has been working with me on local booking and promotion for quite a long while, but over the last 6 months we have made it official.   We still have yet to come up with a good title for her but please welcome Rachel to the Debacle family.

Whew! If you read this far bless your bored little hearts.

See you at the fest!

Zac Nelson - "Charbroile" - on LP and Digital!

Zac Nelson – Charbroile – DBL074

Above all else, Zac Nelson is a strikingly talented and inventive drummer. He is also a very busy guy: you may have caught him in the past under his Hexlove guise on Weird Forest or Holy Mountain, jamming with Zach Hill in CHLL PLL, drumming for Prints on Temporary Residence, or melting hearts with his new band Biosexual; not to mention the 12 solo records he has released since 2008 on such labels as Bathetic, Porter, Goldtimers, Field Hymns and Debacle. Ever the chameleon, Zac’s releases have always been about his huge appetite for mixing and mashing genres. While his last high profile release, "Sound Asleep Sound", on Bathetic was two sidelong, 20 minute tone-float droners, "Charbroile" presents the acme of the psychedelic-drum-pop sound he has been developing over the last few years.

The A side, a dizzying slideshow of 10 microsongs, was recorded during a transitional period in Zac’s life. Itching with frustration and an undercurrent of anger, and bubbling over with manic effusive energy, the songs tend to start with a distinctive drum pattern. Zac then piles on layers of squiggling synth lines, heavy bass tracks, and multi-tracked layers of his distinctive vocals. Songs fly by in starts and stops with a few beautiful detours, most notably the gorgeous harmonies of “Polish XTC.”  Across the entire album Zac is joined by some very talented friends, including Jocelyn Noir of Biosexual on vocals throughout, and “Be Wilder/Edge Strut”, featuring a world-beating performance from renown guitarist Ava Mendoza.

A bit looser than the flip side, the B side is one man’s version of a psychedelic rave up. Even more layering is on display here, with the depth of sound inviting you to fall deeper and deeper into the maelstrom. If the A side is all outward energy and frustration, then the B side is the inward facing struggle. A 20 minute suite “Texas Cedarwood (beauty hype suite 1)” plays like the proceeding 10 tracks broken down to their component parts and stacked up in new shapes and configurations.

Mastered by Scott Colburn (Sun City Girls, Animal Collective)

LP edition is on 150 gram clear vinyl.

Black Hat - Spectral Disorder

Very happy to share with you all this amazing debut EP from Black Hat.

Black Hat - Spectral Disorder

Black Hat is one Nelson Bean a recent transplant from California, and a most welcome addition to the Seattle music landscape.  Spectral Disorder was originally issued on handmade tapes by Nelson, the reissue has been remastered by Dustin Kochel for digital.  Spectral Disorder is all about the intersection of percussion and huge beautiful tones; the push-pull of rhythmic motion with floating, modulating fuzz.  Comparisons to the Modern Love heavies Demdike Stare and Andy Stott aren’t far off.  An immensely impressive debut.

State of the Label

Hello folks!

Wanted to check in about all the cool stuff that recently came out, remind you of awesome releases from earlier in this year and talk about some future plans from Debacle.

First up we have to talk about this amazing crop of recent releases.  Starting with the Dull Knife LP we dropped 5 releases in July including  ZEPHYRS post hardcore opus “Order of the Arrow” and Particle Being Trio’s  space jazz trombone-zones.  Recently we let slip the combo of a reissue of Daniel Bachman’s “Oh Be Joyful” and the subtle, floating “Closed Eyes” from Deep Magic.

On top of all that business, we have explored damaged variations on hip hop with both Rainbow Lorikeet and Boy Fruit, waded in harrowing tide pools with Vertonen At Jennie Richie, marched to the beat of a cartoon dinosaur with First Dog, listened as Demian Johnston expanded the pallet of his brutal BLSPHM project, and soaked up a triptych of hate with BSBC/Juhyo/Bacteria Cult

In pretty short order we should have some news on both the long coming Zac Nelson masterpiece “Charbroile” and a new solo release from Kevin Doria of Growing under his Total Life project.  Both of those will be on glorious LP editions.

In addition to all these standard duties Debacle is launching a few new initiatives.  First is the recently revealed Debacle Limited or DBL | LTD clothing and print line.

LTD is something I have been knocking around in various forms for a while now.  It springs from working with so many great designers, illustrators and artists for Debacle related projects.  I wanted a place to allow these great artists to go wild and have a platform their own work.  The bedrock idea for LTD is the artist edition shirt line.  Every month we will bring you a new exclusive shirt design from an artist I love.  These shirts will be available for preorder for one month only.  If we reach either 50 orders or the end of the month, we will end availability and print and ship the orders.  Our first month is brought to you by one of my favorite people around, the highly regarded underground cartoonist Max Clotfelter.  Next month will be an exclusive design from local illustrator Kyler Martz.  I will announce more artists as details solidify.  These artist edition shirts are not all we have in store though.  Soon I would like to start bringing you guy’s limited edition prints, comic books, and even whole clothing lines from your favorite artists.  Stay tuned.

Finally I am so excited to talk about MOTOR.  MOTOR was recently revealed as a bi-monthly club night I am going to be taking around to various Seattle venues.   MOTOR is a beat focus night mixing old and new ideas of psychedelia and funk.  The idea is to focus on the intersection of krautrock, psych, acid house, Moroder, 70’s synths, Detroit techno, punkfunk, all through the modern lens of the post-noise underground.  That all may sound ambitious and silly, but the number one goal is to shake some hips and bring attention to a core group of Seattle producers.  To that end we are announcing the formation of the MOTOR sub-label.  MOTOR will focus on producing 12” short run singles from our MOTOR-heads.  More on that later but I encourage you to start paying attention to names like Patternmaster, Mood Organ, and Airport.

Come check out the second MOTOR on August 18th at the Lo Fi in Seattle.

Whew!

That’s not even including the super secret new festival I am planning with some buds for November!

Thanks for all your support!

-Sam
